We have a few more to trickle in but why don't we go ahead and get started. I'm suing just showing six o'clock alright super first things first let's go to the Lord in prayer and ask him for his blessing as we got through this we could gracious Father Lord we praise you we praise you for the truth of your word we thank you for the fellowship that we get together and studying your word and we thank you for the that the blessing of men coming together here on Monday night I could be anywhere doing anything and we're all here together young men old men everybody in between studying your word to grow closer to you Lord we pray that tonight you will give us your blessing blessing of your spirit and your wisdom so that we learn more then we grow more in our relationship with you and more and obedience and knowledge of you what will we ask you for these things in Jesus name Amen all right guys you're here for heiroglyphics I heard that other homiletics homiletics so first of all first thing I was covered is why do homiletics and maybe if we know why even if you don't know what it is yet it might make some sense when we get into what homiletics is so you know why do we study God's Word to start with what's one reason Gary yes learn more about him learn more about what he has planned for our lives learn more about the truth of God learn more about the truth of us learn more about the blessings that he promises we get to but I can't wait you guys are gonna meet and talk about the gospel tonight and I'm going to have a lecture on it later we get to learn about that lots of different reasons we study God's Word right Jesus himself said it right man does not live on bread alone but on the Word of God so even for our very sustenance we study the Word of God and homiletics helps us it helps us think we've got it up here some you get to know God better love him more your desire to follow him increases become more like him that for all of us who have accepted salvation in Jesus this is our life desire and goal I want to be more like Jesus every day it's a sanctification process and studying God's Word helps us do that you know our our level of engagement in God's Word varies you know commonly you know maybe some guys in here that that have not spent much time studying the word at all yet there may be other guys who've been studying daily for years and of course the the blessing of the one the blessings of God's Word is as guru used to say you can never plumb the depths of God's work doesn't matter how many times you've been through it I've never once met somebody said you know I've read it enough I know it all there's no more I can learn you know I wouldn't believe me if I said it but I've never heard it said before so wherever you are in terms of your your particular and your walk in God's Word the great thing is it doesn't matter where you are that God's got something for you every day in his word which is really cool for all of us all right so now I have to for for real in-depth Bible study once you get finished skimming the surface and you really start digging in you know one of the things that to really have in-depth knowledge and study is help from outside sources listening to Bible teachers reading Bible commentaries people who've studied and studied and learning from them but always fundamentally the study of God's Word starts with our own individual digging and rolling up our sleeves and digging into the word one thing that I appreciate about the BSF system is the first thing you know the first thing we do is not read the notes then the lecture you know then meet and then do the questions because you know otherwise by the time we get to the questions we would just be spoon-fed you know instead the plan is just like God's plan is that when we pick up the Bible we're not we're not picking up the first thing the summary we're picking up the Word of God so foundationally the first place we start is our own study of the work so homiletics is a tool to help us analyze the Bible and summarize and analyze passages of Scripture so that as we read it and we study it we were able to pull more out of it we'll be able to learn more truth and you know like we just said a minute ago how we don't we don't man does not live on bread but on the Word of God we're able to further and more deeply more richly sustain ourselves as we learn more about what God's truth is telling us so climate by the waters good point here the goal is to know God better through homiletics it's not to be perfect in homiletics so just make sure and get that up front okay so here we go homiletic we just said why do we do homiletics there's what homiletics is there's five basic steps to it content divisions subject sentence aim and applications now you guys all have and I thought it would be better to give it to you at the beginning yeah this handout the first one that says homiletics and so you can see we're going to walk down through the five different parts that are on this form this form is is certainly handy if you want to do homiletics to use the form but you certainly you don't have to you can start with a blank piece of paper or a blank computer screen and just go to town so but this may this may help us we go through alright so we're going to walk through each of these five steps and then we're going to do a little practice to get a feel for it okay first thing is the content the content is asking yourself like it says what is it about it is you're gonna from the content down to the subject sentence the first three steps its facts only and we're gonna think and shrink we're gonna keep boiling down summarize until we get a capital e capital eight the essence of whatever passage it is so and you can see and most of this is right here I am kind of spare some you guys from having taken notes too fast if you want if you follow this form it says ten to twenty items in and by the way we're in a unique situation this week we just have six verses in our lesson in next week there's only five verses so normally content if you look you know what last week we had all the chapter or the two weeks before we had all a chapter four so and then you think about okay boiling it down at 10 to 20 items kind of make sense but sometimes if you start with 5 verses you don't have to you have to do that much work on content but so here we are in content and what's really important again if you keep imagining this in your mind from the content the divisions the subject sentence its facts only we're not interpreting we're not trying to explain what the meaning is behind it we're explaining what does it say just straight up oh there it is what the passage says not an interpretation and so you can use the same as it says the same words as the Bible you can it's fine to repeat it you don't have to change the words if it says justification you can use justification in your content all right a little more on content and it's just like I said a minute ago the the think and shrink think and shrink introducing the smaller portion complete sentences are not necessary we'll get there on division and subject sentence we'll want to make actual sentences but see if it says that here I'm sure a little more here on the on the PowerPoint so you're there we go there's not a there's not a specific set way to do it like it says you don't have to use complete sentences this is your way of taking notes the one thing that you do want to do is you want to ride down the verses so if it's verses you know you're gonna combine a lot of sometimes you're just going to start by taking two verses and there's two sentences and making one sentence out of it just shrinking it down there's you just wring it down you the main thing you want to do is keep track of what verses is it and then however you do your notes you may have abbreviations you may have complete sentences or not but you are just simply restating what it says in fewer words just keep shrinking it's just the facts once that detective just the facts ma'am Friday go Friday there you go this is Joe Friday just the facts okay now then the divisions this is where remember we're still shrinking down right with the divisions now you're going to take your content and you're gonna reduce down to and it says normally two to four divisions so you guys you see when I'm sure that's not me fouling up you see when when I do the lecture at the end of the night I have I divided in divisions that comes from this is in fact one of our homiletics is on the devotional talk so I that's the way I organize my thoughts as I do homiletics every week and so if you see divisions that's where the divisions come from during the lecture and again Joe Friday backs only right you're just it's the facts only you're not interpreting at all okay just like the subject sentences now you're gonna write verses on the subject sentence maybe you took verses 1 & 2 and you summarized them down to one sentence and three and four down to one sentence then with the divisions do the same thing you're gonna keep track of what verses or you're talking about here so as you boil it down and you and now you are you know that with the content we're schooling a little faster you just summarize it but when you get to the divisions you're going to actually use complete sentences because now you're starting to crystallize with the divisions alright step 3 walking down the sheet on the back side down okay if you study you think about any week that we study we go through our BSF lesson or even whatever you may be studying after you finish study and say a chapter of the Bible you really want to be able to walk away and say what was this about what was this chapter about oh I remember you know and and I'm not good at memory but you know some people got really good saying I want ya chapter two or John or chapter well one of the ways that people are able to do that the way we're able to pull that meat off the bone and really dig in the word is by summarizing and the subject sentence is now where you were capturing if I could put what it's about there first you're capturing what happened and again we're still on Joe Friday here it's just the facts only but now you're gonna put it in one sentence not how can you and this really is the goal and we do this every week it's capture whatever passage that we're studying to boil it down the one sentence that's ten words ten words and it's it's going through the exercise of digging in to boil it down that's when you can really start thinking what is this about what is the core of this passage that we're reading okay so you went from the the content which is just shortening down maybe two or three verses to the divisions and now you're squeezing them between two and four divisions complete sentences then you take those divisions you boat down to one sentence that's the subject sentence and that's the ultimate here for maybe you can think about I like this Joe Friday Joe what happened and he says one sentence here's what this is about here's what happened okay and now we're gonna switch now you know what happened so you're gonna switch to the aim you can see here the aim the main truth or principle that's taught by this passage and as you are let me go back one okay so so far with the content division subject since it's been just the facts now you've boiled it down that subject sentence is one sentence long okay and the aim we generally phrase it you you want to cause your audience to learn what and most the time when we're writing these our audiences ourselves what is it this I boiled down this whole chapter into one sentence now what is it that I that I believe God is teaching me or trying to teach me get in here what is he trying to teach me in this passage that's what the aim is about so now you get to you get to stop doing just the facts and say all right now I'm gonna I'm gonna really start using my brain God give me your wisdom here and by the way just like we prayed at the beginning of this you know we prayer is a huge tool to get the Holy Spirit to be able to help you'd be able to understand the text right we learn through God's Word that we cannot comprehend the gospel we cannot accept the gospel without the Holy Spirit and abling us too so we always won't start there just like we did this even and then now this is where you can you can really start getting some leverage on Holy Spirit helped me figure out what is this main truth okay a little more about the aim so the truth and I said a minute ago we say cause the audience to learn what if you can write that see ATL and then finish the sentence now you're talking about a name and it's usually like I said it's either truth about God or man it's a it's a it's a doctrinal truth sounds big and fancy but it's it's doctrine it's in the Bible and or like it says attitudes believers should have okay look we'll do that here in a minute oh now this is good I forgot about this slide so in looking at your aim I'm going to ask these questions as you're critiquing yourself and when we did the content the divisions and the subjects image that's just facts so you can kind of critique yourself on whether you have you know that I've actually summarized correctly what happened but once you get to the aim you know now we're digging in and now you can ask yourself once you write that in cause the audience to learn that we are saved by faith in Jesus Christ if that happened to be the aim and I and then you can ask yourself is this true what I said what I what I'm getting from this if I'm gonna be teaching it to someone and you can pretend you are even if you're not teaching anyone pretend that you are be prepared to because think about this maybe this week God is going to put somebody in front of you in an elevator and a cab at a baseball game or something and there's gonna and there's gonna be a question say wow I remember I read this what I'm going to cause this guy to learn what right you just you never know because God's only ones gonna open those doors for us so is it the main truth and is it memorable so now you've boiled down the passage say it's a chapter of Scripture you boil it down to that subject sentence this is what happened and now the aim and this is what we learn from this chapter all right so now you bolt it down now I know what I studied this year this week last step yes sir sure right there right there yeah good the forms got most of this on here for the aim okay yes sir okay last step applications so you're gonna ask yourself these questions there we go yes are they anybody else not did we run out of them yes there you go this is we're gonna end up that's another formula pass out here in a minute but it's that same thing all right guys sorry the subject sentence here's what happened the aim this is what we're learning here and now these application questions you know what you know ultimately we don't just study the Bible for head knowledge right we're studying for heart transformation how does God want to change me from this and this is really what the application questions are aimed at their questions how does this verse affect you how does this verse challenge you how do you respond to this verse why do I think this way why what does this was this tell me about God and so we have the divisions we talked about we have two to four divisions so we've broken down usually a chapter in the two to four sentences and for each of those divisions we write an application question anywhere and it says you can see it's targeting the heart as opposed to behavior you know one example would be how many people are you going to share the gospel with this week that's a behavior but if you go to the heart you know why do I not share the gospel with more people and now you're getting into the heart and that's what it's about we can always ask behavior questions but the behavior always follows the heart and God wants our heart so we always want to focus on the heart you want to make them challenging and you want to avoid simple yes-or-no questions you know is God your Savior good question but it's just say yes or no question it doesn't for most people it doesn't cause them that it doesn't challenge them as just as a quick answer you want to have a question when you ask it you ask yourself fundamentally wow that's that's one that really where the rubber meets the road for me I got work on that a couple more says on these questions some you want to put some balance those that convict you those it encourage you elevate your thinking require change so you've got some balance and who is your target and frankly and I also of course I said I'd do homiletics for the lecture well you know of course I look at and I see several hundred guys but every time I'm studying this I know God's talking to me and there so it's real easy I'm asking myself you know and I and I never run out of material where I need work when I'm asking myself these questions okay alright so you guys have got you either have and by way I serve appreciate so many people showing up we might run a little short on forms but that's a good thing I can get your forms ok so what I wanted to do is get through that all those steps which are all listed on this form basically now to get to do a little work alright that will go back so if you have at least one of the two forms either the blank that it's the one that just says homiletics not homiletics discussion or devotional but just homiletic either the blank form or the form that's got my handwriting on it okay either way here so what we're gonna do when I ask you guys to take your Bible out and turn to John chapter 2 oops by the way if you have already if you've got the one with my handwriting on it and make sure and say this to yourself I didn't give this to show you perfection I gave this show you how I stumbled through it a few years ago and so you can it's it's the minimum bar you can just work your way up from there okay so here we go let's let's let's say that we're going to do homiletics for John chapter two and again we go back to the member of the why alright well the why is that we want to learn it better so we can grow in our knowledge of God a relationship with God and so that God can change our heart to be more like Jesus that's why we're doing homiletic so here we go we've got here at John chapter two saying I'm just going to read here on the third day a wedding took place at Cana and Galilee Jesus mother was there and Jesus and His disciples had also been invited to the wedding when the wine was gone Jesus mother said to him they have no more wine woman why do you involve me jesus replied my hour has not yet come now let's stop there so thank God first thing is content first thing is content we want to reduce the facts you know is wrong I remember Jill Friday okay so what if you wanted to combine maybe like I did but if you wanted to combine the first and second sentences the first and second versus excuse me what could you say there it doesn't even have to be a complete sentence Jesus at wedding apples and his mom okay and that's one and two and you can you can just look at clay I appreciate that you can look at how long one and two is and say all right we boil it down and notice that's the facts how about what we say next if you want to combine three and four three four and five let's say three and four somebody spit out to me how would you now that's a good interpretation I understand what you're saying but we want to make sure and say the facts just like other than the facts and I liked it palpable thank you Joe so we want to we want to make sure and say just a factually on point with what's what's in the text what's that ran out of wine one say mom asked Jesus for help okay okay but not his time okay all right good so we're I know we're putting up this up here quickly but you can see now we've taken those four verses in in far fewer words they actually summarized those four verses okay so you guys can we keep doing this you keep going down you keep summarizing the next one you'd say five through you know whatever in fact let's do that let's do one more I'll try not to look at what I did already and not cheating there his mother said to his servants do whatever he tells you nearby stood six stone water jars the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing each holding from 20 to 30 gallons Jesus said to the servants fill the jars of water so they filled them to the brim and we can put all those five through seven together okay yeah then it may be what did I got I've got five six seven so mom what's that okay so there you go so I can see from when I did this I've got to put this entire chapter I got a bullet down to four sentences so it's it's a matter of just digging and working you know rolling up your sleeves and and getting dirty and and and for sure if we all right now sat down and we did content for all of John chapter two everybody's would be different now the content for sure but once we start getting to the divisions then they're gonna get started getting more similar so you I can see that when I did this I had my first division which was verses 1 through 12 in one sentence so we can kind of debate on okay mom tells you no servants obey Jesus now here's what's kind of tough that as you as you start doing this it's really hard to cut these words out to boil it down you know you're like well okay because whoever said these are ceremonial jars it's you know there are big jars there how many of them there's 20 to 30 gallons you know anything and that's that's all it's significant but we got boilers down I'm on if ultimately you're gonna say what did I learn in John chapter 2 it was about and I'm gonna have a subject soon so I'm telling one sentence Jo Friday what happened and then second on the aim what do you learn from this I'm gonna tell you a sentence and learn what you and if you can do that right you're not it's not that we're cutting out necessary doctrine by cutting out you know how many gallons of the jars hold that kind of thing but we're boiling it down so that we learn and now it's soaking into my heart what I what I learn about Jesus here and and ultimately yeah it's it's informative there 20 to 30 gallons ceremonial jars but that's really not the point welcoming when we boil down to Jesus making a new creation of us because and that was his first miracle changing water to wine right okay so we keep doing this it's just the facts then we do a division sentence and at some point there's how many verses are in this chapter 225 so we go all the way down the page of 25 and maybe we get that if we if we reduced by half meaning every two verses we put into one then out of 25 now we're down to about 12 but you remember look at divisions like the backside two to four divisions every time so now we got to take if we did the content down to twelve sinan roughly colon sentences we got to get that down to two to four so we got to keep boiling it down keep going down so like I said I mind when I do it I had verses 1 through 12 so we'd be all the way down here all the way through 12 and then and then we're going to make one sentence out of all the first 12 verses and it's hard especially if you haven't done it before but now you really start digging in and getting the essence of what happened here so we're gonna we're gonna rock and roll here guys times flying so you guys look at let's take take a minute everybody read look at 1 through 12 and don't look at what I wrote and tell me give me that one sentence to summarize verses 1 through 12 my first home now that's smart he looked at the subheading right there Jesus changed water into wine that summarized most of 1 through 12 and if we add if we add a little more to it maybe now her I appreciate having a professional router this helped so Jesus perform and I want Bri v8 so we keep going first miracle turning water to wine at wedding now you could have a few more descriptive words in there if you wanted to wedding where the wedding was how many gowns but that's a great point Jen okay so what we see right here is how valuable the journey is right just going through this exercise how do I pull it down because now anybody happened to ask you in the morning hello is Jesus first miracle I know what it is he changed water to wine he was at a wedding and he calls the disciples to there we go so and and just going through this exercise and say hey well okay this takes a little work here and that's the point right and God loves it when we dig in his word and we start working that's it I mean what it's one thing and we've all we've all been there and may still for some people you know you okay I had a Bible study and so right before I went and I got a read chapter two real fast and I went to Boston you know and okay that's good it's a lot better nothing but you think about if God's sending us this letter a love letter from someone that we really love and we you know you think about you sent across the world your war and you sent it back to your loved one and when they read real fasting they took off a little boy they just sat down and they just dug in and they just chewed on every words you wrote you know and you can see God just say I love it when you read my work so all right so this is divisions and so we're going to boil it down and for again two two four four whatever the passage is so here we had I wrote out four divisions for this chapter alright so after we bullet down the content divisions we had two to four divisions now we write the subjects units where we capture the entire passage which is really why you got to keep boiling down you got to keep taking out you know descriptive terms and get to the key points so once you have these two to four sentences then you're in write the subject sentence along as you remember this I think from now on clay Jo Friday what happened one sentence just the facts so on this one I said for the whole chapter Jesus performs transformational first signs and clears temples and many believe because we won't say he went through the temple courts he turned over the money changers and many believe but 2nn I'm countin and I see I had to scratch out a word I am at substitute one in and that happens a bunch to try to get it down to ten works and it in if you guys are doing it and okay mines 13 words mines 12 words it's okay it's the journey right remember we said at the very beginning that the goal of homiletics not is to learn more about God and its truce as opposed to being perfect homiletics alright but the the the rules of homiletics help us dig into that word like we need to buy what does I don't know how many did these go around till we ran out the ones with my riding on would you would you pass those up here if you don't you guys anybody get this one here okay hey I tell you what if you are a group leader will you hand yours or somebody else and I'll email this to everybody the one with the riding on it okay so after okay so then you had your subject sentence and I think I told you guys for mine I wrote Jesus performs transformational first signs clears temple and many believe and that even as I look at right now I can do better not come on Kelly it's well if you get a few and that's really good Jesus reveals himself but what all happened in in this whole chapter because he he revealed himself in a way he performed his first miracle he he went into the the temple you know and turned typical courts and turned over the money changers tables meanie believed and and so usually it if you want me back up if you have the blessing to be able to use three words to summarize you're doing great and a lot better than I ever do I'm always struggling to get it down to ten works so and and but to your point about kind of this yeah as I look at it this sentence this kind of bumbles along between commas so for sure you can do better than I did and summarize it factually because you that was a that Jesus revealed himself is a great spiritual truth and what happens here for sure but keep in mind and I'm Joe Friday what happened but I tell you this sentence here's what happened in Chapter two and in ten words I'm going to tell you what happened okay so now the aim as we said this aim is the main truth or principle that you want to learn what is the significance of Jesus turning water to wine as his first miracle for tells us crucifixion how will I use Jesus's first miracle in my daily that's good so now and when everybody's got a different question which again it's your own journey I think it's place it's your own homiletics but for each of these sentences to ask that question an application that is applying the text to your life to your heart to your faith walk but applying it not just learning it but now applying it okay so that's homiletics in a nutshell and a couple things we have two additional handouts and that is gots helping me out that have them oh it's hump there we go huh molester devotional talk homiletics just Sunday School lesson great thing if you ever are in a situation Wow if you're gonna if you want to teach or need to teach somebody and or even just lead a discussion about some scripture homiletics is a great outline to be able to do it it's it's a it's a great help or if it's just you yourself and it will start in a couple of weeks all of the group leaders will start doing homiletics and we do it in our leaders meeting every Saturday morning and it's just more it's just a more and better way for us to dig in to the word and I would I would love to spend to be able to do all of John chapter two but in seven minutes I need to be down there leading the song so guys thank you so much for coming let's wrap up in a word of Prayer and we'll take off father God we thank you once again for your blessing of the truth of your word we thank you for the word itself we thank you that you give us this food through your word sustainance lord thank you for giving us homiletics is a way to learn it and in in our hearts thank you for the men that came in that Lord I pray that they received your words not mine in this talk Lord and I pray that will bless them in their lives and with their families or Jesus name we pray amen thank you guys they show them forms that you can actually use oh I bet they do yeah yeah it makes sense personal question yes sir esky do you but can you recommend me some of the casinos the easy name remember I'd say okay Jack Garbo gee a.rb oh okay he's here in town great guy and I've had a lot of people a lot of people that have called me back and said thank you for sending me to him he's a super guy okay great Garbo
