- Engineering.
- I was on my way to becoming an engineer at an early age. My earliest memories of school were that I was very good at Math. That has followed me through school, career and to where I am right now. Mathematics is a funny thing. It is this absolute truth that is always consistent with itself and explains everything even in our universe though we don't know why it does. When I was younger, I just enjoyed Math because it made so much sense, that I could use it to solve problems and in some deeper way the truth and security of it has always pulled at me.
- When I was ~10 years old my mom worked at a Stationery Store. Not sure why she did this, but she brought me those Brain Teaser knick-knacks that are still so popular. I would get a new one every week or so. If you are not familiar with these things think about the Rubik's Cube. These puzzles were of that type, just not as difficult. In all honesty, I think the Rubik's Cube is the only Brain Puzzle I have been unable to solve. I *loved* these things! I think my mom unknowingly found something else that I enjoyed as much as Math. Looking back, it is easy to see why. They both involved Problem Solving.
- When I got to college, I had to declare a major during Orientation Week. I had no clue! I turned to my roommate, and best friend from high school, and asked him- what did you put down? He said- engineering. My dad is an engineer at IBM. I replied- what does it involve? He wasn't completely sure, but he said- it uses a lot of Math. That was it! In those 45 seconds I declared Engineering as my major and was off and running. It took me a little while to see why I enjoyed it. At first, I just enjoyed doing the Math and didn't pay too much attention to what else was involved. Soon enough I started feeling the same feelings that I did when I would solve the Brain Puzzles my mom would bring me. I realized that the simplest definition of an Engineer is 'Problem Solver.' Engineers *love* to solve problems! That was the clear linkage between my love for Math, Brain Puzzles and Engineering.

- Mentoring
- As you will read about in My Life in God post I remember enjoying helping younger kids than myself growing up. In college I discovered helping high school students at church was amazing! I felt the same exhilaration as I did with doing Math and solving Brain Puzzles.
